Dr. Luther’s Small Catechism lesson for the week: 2-19-2012

The Creed
In the plain form in which the head of the family
shall teach it to his household

The Second Article: Redemption

“And in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: he descended into hell, the third day he rose from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and is seated on the right hand of God, the Father almighty, whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.”

What does this mean?

Answer: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, delivered me and freed me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with silver and gold but with his holy and precious blood and with his innocent sufferings and death, in order that I may be his, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true.[1]

shall teach it to his household

The Third Article: Sanctification

“I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.”

What does this mean?

Answer: I believe that by my own reason or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and preserved me in true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth and preserves it in union with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church he daily and abundantly forgives all my sins, and the sins of all believers, and on the last day he will raise me and all the dead and will grant eternal life to me and to all who believe in Christ. This is most certainly true.[1]

Next Meeting: February 21st, 2012, 7:00 p.m. We will receive a report on the Operation Barnabas convention! Pastor Morehouse and Marty will be attending as our representatives. If able, Dawn and Russ Hawk will also attend.

Dawn will be contacting a representative of the Stand Down which will be held in the spring and we hope to have that speaker at our March 21, 2012 meeting.

We are continuing to put together our April meeting with the hope of having our Bishop representative attend.

Please place this next item on your calendar:

The American Legion Auxiliary, Oro Valley Post, is presenting a “Lost River” film screen of The True Story of Anna Ella Carrol. The proceeds from the film will benefit local military personnel, veterans and their families:

When: February 12, 2012
Where: 127 E. Congress Street, Tucson, AZ
Time: 2:00 pm
General Donation: $7
Patron Donation: $25
Contact: Oro Valley Unit 132 - ovunit132@gmail.com
Telephone: 520-229-1064

Who was Anna Ella Carrol? Her greatest role was as an unofficial member of President Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet during the Civil War. She penned war powers pamphlets that supported the constitutionality of various actions by Lincoln and his administration. She is credited with devising a military strategy in November 1861 that resulted in the first two major victories for the Union.

A second film, The Lioness, will be presented on March 3 and 4, as part of the Women’s Veterans Month and Women’s History Month.

I have spoken to a representative of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System VA Voluntary Service: A new program has been developed due to the increased number of young female veterans who are in need of obstetric care. The womens’ clinic now is able to oversee pregnancy cases and cares for approximately 96 women throughout the year. There is an ongoing need for baby items, as well as for items to assist new moms. It was decided at our meeting last night that we would participate in donating items to these women veterans. Because this is an ongoing need throughout the year, and because the LWML is currently accepting donations for layettes to provide elsewhere, I am asking for approval to place a ‘hold’ on our collection or these materials.

Pastor Morehouse provided a contact for our Operation Barnabas logo shirts. Dawn will make that contact to determine how and when we are able to order these shirts.

Pastor Morehouse will also talk to Jean and task her with obtaining cards similar to a business card which we will be able to place with items provided given in care to our veterans, mililtary and families.

Thank you all for your faithfulness!
