What Does It Mean to be Lutheran in America?: Discord in the LCMS in the 1960s and 1970s

This workshop is an examination and analysis of the controversy within The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in the 1960s and 1970s with attention to doctrinal issues and church-political developments in the Synod. The discussion will chart the historical events leading up to the controversy and its aftermath, with a focus on topics such as the interpretation of Scripture, confessional subscription, ecumenical relations, polity and addressing controversy in the church.

Dr. Gerhard Bode

Professor of Historical Theology

Dr. Gerhard Bode is chairman of the Department of Historical Theology, professor of Historical Theology and director of the Center for Reformation Research at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He joined the faculty in 2005. He also is the Seminary’s archivist. His historical expertise includes some very unique and rare trivia about the Seminary. He would love to tell you all about it.
