In our text today we hear Jesus’ reaction to Jerusalem after His entry, which the church celebrates on Palm Sunday. Jesus knew what He would find. These are not the words of a man who is shocked. Rather, these are the words of a father who is grieved by the state of his child. Jesus weeps over the city for two reasons: her blindness to the things of peace and the wickedness that she has been working in her blindness. The Gospel reading for today has long been thought of as being one of the difficult sayings of Jesus. At first hearing, it may seem to indicate that Jesus is teaching that good stewardship of God’s gifts should be done by whatever means may be expedient, even if they are not honest! If that were the point of the narrative, we could hear the sermon’s apostolic benediction and get on with receiving God’s gifts.
